Why You Keep Getting Sick After Having Kids (And What Your Immune System Is Trying to Tell You)

You know that feeling when your kid comes home from school or daycare with the beginnings of a new cold?

And your first thought is:

“Cool. Here goes another five weeks of pass-the-virus.”

This was me a few years ago.

Two kids under five.
Preschool germs everywhere.
Totally normal.

What wasn’t normal?

I caught. Every. Single. Thing.

And I was sicker and for significantly longer than my kids.

An 18-hour stomach bug for my toddler looked like a four-day barf-o-rhea situation for me.

Not fun.

Not normal.

And I’ve had quite a few patients with the exact same story.

Why moms get sicker than their kids

Yes, kids get sick. Their immune systems are learning.

But it’s not normal for mom to:

  • Catch every single bug

  • Have worse symptoms

  • Stay sick longer

  • Feel completely flattened by minor viruses

That’s usually a sign of a struggling immune system.

So let’s talk about why that happens.

1. Nutrient Deficiencies and Postpartum Immune Health

Your immune system runs on nutrients.

Not megadoses. Not trendy “immune boosters.”

But consistent, daily enough-ness.

You need:

  • Protein (immune cells are literally built from it)

  • Zinc

  • Vitamin D

  • Iron

  • B vitamins

  • Vitamin A

  • Selenium

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, stress, and skipped meals drain these reserves fast.

And if you never replenished after having kids?

Your immune system is trying to run on vibes.

2. Chronic Stress and Lack of Sleep Suppress Immunity

The mom equation:

Overwhelming to-do list

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Mental load
    = A body stuck in stress mode

Chronic stress elevates cortisol in the short term and long term dysregulates it.

Either way, immune function takes a hit.

There’s strong research linking:

  • Poor sleep to increased infection risk

  • Chronic stress to slower recovery times

  • Burnout to weakened immune response

There’s no magic pill for this one.

But nervous system regulation and better fueling dramatically help.

3. Skipping Meals and Blood Sugar Chaos

This one gets overlooked constantly.

Skipping breakfast.
Sad desk lunches.
Leftover crusts and cold coffee as a “meal.”

When blood sugar swings wildly, your body experiences it as physiological stress.

And when protein intake is low?

Immune cells, which are essentially protein-based little warriors, struggle.

Undereating is incredibly common in moms.

And under-fueling = underperforming immune system.

4. Gut Health and Immune Function

A huge portion of your immune system lives in your gut.

Your gut:

  • Houses immune cells

  • Acts as a barrier against pathogens

  • Regulates inflammatory response

If you’ve had:

  • New digestive issues since pregnancy

  • Bloating, loose stools, constipation

  • Recurrent infections

  • Frequent antibiotic use

There’s often a gut-immune connection.

If your gut health is off, your immune resilience will be too.

Supplements: Helpful, but not the whole story

Yes, I have my personal immunity stack.

But here’s the thing:

Supplements work best when they build on a solid foundation.

If you:

  • Aren’t eating enough
