Postpartum fatigue: Why you’re not just tired because you’re a mom
Yes, the system is broken. But your symptoms still deserve attention.
OCTOBER 20 , 2026
True story.
I got a spicy comment on one of my Instagram posts a while back.
The post was about motherhood exhaustion. I was sharing some tips and offering a free supplement guide to help fill in nutrient gaps that can make moms feel tired and foggy.
The comment (paraphrased):
“Moms are tired because they’re unsupported in this society, and won’t be helped by whatever it is you’re selling.”
Ok first of all, rude 😆
There’s a lot of nuance her so let’s break it down.
Why are moms so tired after having a baby?
Here’s the thing.
Spicy Mama is (partially) right.
Fixing yournutrient deficiencies can’t send you back in time to get the maternity leave you needed and deserved.
Good blood sugar management certainly can’t:
Force your boss to give you a flexible schedule
Make your partner cook 50% of the meals
Align your kids’ school hours with your workday
Working on your postpartumhormones can’t:
Make childcare more affordable
Fix your insurance coverage
Force your government to invest in families
These systemic issues are real.
They matter.
And they absolutely contribute to the stress load of parents (disproportionately on moms), which makes us exhausted, distracted, and moody AF.
Especially if you’re in the U.S.

Why Postpartum Feels So Hard in the U.S. (And What Other Cultures Do Differently)
When postpartum fatigue is more than “just motherhood”
But here’s where Spicy Mama gets it wrong.
What makes it even harder to deal with all of that?
To function inside it?
To advocate for change?
Can nutrient deficiencies and hormones cause postpartum fatigue?
When you have a raging case of anemia that nobody has screened you for, and your energy is so low you’re dragging yourself through the day with brain fog and depression.
When early perimenopause kicks in and your cycle shrinks to 24 days, and you get maybe five decent days a month before PMS takes over.
When your blood sugar is all over the place, crashing daily at 3pm and leaving you anxious, shaky, and completely wiped.
When everyone is yelling “IT’S JUST MOTHERHOOD!!!” while you’re unclogging the drain for the tenth time this month because your hair loss is off the rails.
Two things can be true: Moms need more support and better healthcare

We can be:
Wildly unsupported by society → leading to stress, burnout, and long-term depletion
AND
Wildly unsupported by the healthcare system → leading to missed nutrient deficiencies, hormone issues, and ongoing symptoms.
Same outcome.
Different (but overlapping) root causes.
What can actually help with postpartum fatigue?
The good news?
One of these is something we can directly improve.
We can get you feeling physically better.
And when your body is supported, you have:
More energy
Better mood stability
Higher stress tolerance
More capacity to advocate for yourself and your family

Why postpartum fatigue and hormone symptoms get missed
Here’s where the disconnect usually happens:
We’re going to medical doctors looking for medical treatment for symptoms that are mostly from non- medical problems.
Yes, we absolutely want to rule out true medical conditions.
But once that’s done?
A lot of what moms are dealing with lives in:
Nutrition
Lifestyle
Nervous system support
Targeted supplementation
And not typically prescriptions.
That’s where a dietitian’s scope comes in.
And why this conversation matters.
So if you reaching a dead end with your current care team, it might be time to expand and see a functional dietitian. We don’t expect our doctors to provide therapy at our visits, let’s also not expect them to know about nutrition and lifestyle when their training is in medicine.
